The constitution of Poland grants everyone the right to free education (this includes also university education). It is one of the citizen's rights and a duty of the state. In my opinion university education should not be free, at least not free for all.
First of all it must be stated that the way we think of free education is a remnant of socialistic view of state as something that has to control everything and help everyone. As a result in the area of education we have a system that educates in a range of specializations that are not in fact needed, that generates unemployed with university degree. It is for the most part the effect of free education. The state cannot give as much money as it is needed for modern education in all of public schools.
Secondly, I think it is important to emphasise that free university education is an illusion, a fiction we like to believe in. We pay taxes from which schools are maintained. Students who do not live in university centres have to pay for their accommodation and those costs are high. People who claim that university education is free do not see those facts or do not want to see them.
To sum up, I think we should consider changes in our educational system and stop pretending that we can afford maintaining free education at universities. However, we cannot forget about the poorest people. The system should be organized in such a way that would allow them to study too.
